Note To Self: Do-It-Yourself Books
August 7th, 2007OK so like, it costs me about $6-$7 to make each copy of Moose River book one, then it’s a bit of effort to bind the books and glue on the covers. Now while I’m not against this route (hearing people say “that’s hardcore” at conventions is totally worth it), after reading this article, I decided to look into other routes for book productions. Let’s see what I can’t pull together.
BOOK FACTS:
5.5″ x 8.5″ (1.55:1)
4 color cover, 100 lbs. card stock
132 pages (66 sheets of paper), 20 lbs. paper stock, black/white halftone
With this in mind…
Kinko’s: $30
Blurb: $33.95 (full color pages, 8×10)
Xlibris: ??? (offers a bunch of shit I don’t need)
Lulu: $7.17/copy (6×9 B&W, Perfect Bound)
—- 50 copies = $6.11!!
—- 100 copies = $5.57!!!!
Oh wow…! That’s a pretty good price right there from Lulu. I wonder if that price is too good to be true or not. Next up, I suppose I should send in a book and check out the quality. I think it’ll be worth spending some cash on it to try it out…

TOM: Didn’t think about them. I’ll give them a gander.
EDIT: Hmmm…. $6 per book apart from a set-up fee. That might be worth looking into too. I guess what I should do next is get a test copy done up at both and see which ones are superior. This outta be neat to see worked out! 😀
