ムース川の日本 – Intro

ORIGINAL POST:
02/10/2006
OK, if you don’t know already, I’m gonna take a small break from Moose River Regular to bring you a side, one-shot comic project called ムース川の日本 (“Muusu-gawa no Nihon”, or Moose River Japan). Mostly just to flesh out my irritation of how easy it is to just shit out a web comic using nothing more than psudo-manga style and some witty video game references. This will, of course, be turned into a mini-comic in the end. Similarlly, when I’m done posting all the Moose River Japan comics online, those comics will be quickly moved to another point in the archives, freeing up the dates for more Moose River Regular comics. (This means that in some point in the future, the comic for 02/06/2006 will no longer be page one of Moose River Japan but an actual Moose River Regular comic.)

I expect to get about twenty-ish of these pages done…. and I doubt it’ll take me more than twenty days to do it. In fact, it might even be done before twenty days. We’ll see.

Though unlike with Moose River Regular, I’m 100% open to taking suggesting with where to take Moose River Japan. You will be properly credited if I use any of you’re ideas. It’ll be a fun GROUP project! It would help if you too shared my contempt with shitty psudo-manga web comics. And even if you make some psudo-manga web comics yourself, now’s a good time to look at yourself and laugh…. unlike certain folk from a certain religion who hate certain cartoons from a certain little newspaper from a certain European country.

BTW, if this wasn’t what you were expecting, sorry. Likewise, if I shit on some of your favorite web comics, …I’m not sorry.

I’m a hardcore gamer/internet user. Typically classified as a geek. However, I’m married to a very hot girl, who is also a gamer. Yeah, it’s mostly false hope, but that kinda thing DOES happen in real life. I still agree the genre is overdone. =X

Plippy (Feb 13, 2006, 22:24):
DC: If I’m your God, should you have said “Oh my Plippy”? 😀 OMP OMP!!

DC (Feb 13, 2006, 2:14):
Reasons why it needs to end.
1.”Manga-Esqued” Drawing Style…
I have not once seen it done right, it just looks like a poor man’s version of a poor man’s manga drawing style. Their excuse is that they’re emulating a manga style of drawing while trying to be unique and original with their own style. Uh no. You just suck hairy donkey balls.

2.The use of Internet Slang…
Using words such as “L33t” and “W00t” in your dialogue does not make it any cooler. In fact, it just makes it sound as if you used it in a real conversation. Really Retarded.

3.The False Hope it gives to young virgin geeks/nerds everywhere…
So your comic has nerds/geeks who are still kinda cool because they have a sexy programming job and know all there is to gaming and internet jargon, and because of this, they have to beat off cute girls left and right with a stick, no, make that a XBox controller. Therefore, this must translate to real life, right? Huge surprise as it is, no, it won’t. Although you may identify with these characters, you will not get the girl, you will still be unemployed, and you will still live in your momma’s basement.

That’s just my 2cents.

DC (Feb 13, 2006, 1:59):
Oh my god. Philippe you are my god. Finally someone to bring matters to a head. You’re absolutely right. The Pseudo Manga/Gamer Comicstrip Format which includes Geek Chic Programmers with their Japanese Schoolgirl Girlfriends and a Sexy albeit Naive Android Girl webcomics need to end here and now!

Plippy (Feb 12, 2006, 20:54):
Run: This isn’t supposed to be a rant comic. My rant was just an introduction. There’s nothing wrong with rants, but I do see how rant comics are “cookiecutter” in their own way… it’s all talk and no action.

Timbosister (Feb 12, 2006, 13:41):
Also: yeah, ttly, lolz!!1

Timbosister (Feb 12, 2006, 13:40):
I like your face in the second panel. (I promise this is the first time I’ve ever said that to anyone.)

Run (Feb 12, 2006, 9:13):
I agree that manga-game comics are pretty played out but actually, so are rant-comics. so i would like to get back to the story

Plippy (Feb 11, 2006, 16:45):
I don’t mind if a comic is psudo-manga-styled as much as I mind that too many people use it to fall back on. “My comic sucks, but hey, it has pretty manga pictures!” Furthermore, the comic should still be good, regardless of what art style you use, provided that it’s still appropriate (like I don’t think Ghost World would look good if it used the super-hero art style).

Jamie (Feb 11, 2006, 16:10):
Hhahah it’s so true. I feel ya so much on this whole point. Just go to www.onlinecomics.net and you’ll realize hot depressing the whole online comic scene is.

Plippy (Feb 11, 2006, 12:17):
Every once in a while I like to prove that “I can do that, but I don’t wanna.” If anything, it shows how my crude style is actually something I choose to do and not necessairly the limit to my artistic ability.
